Photobook New Zealand: Bookfair, special photobook exhibitions, & panel event updates
Here’s the latest update from Photobook New Zealand as they progress toward their inaugural event in Wellington from 11 – 13 March 2016:
Book fair
Spaces at the book fair are nearly full with a great range of independent photographers, distributors and small presses. Among the many books we’re looking forward to is Fiona Pardington: A Beautiful Hesitation published by Victoria University Press in association with Baker + Douglas – look out for it at the Baker + Douglas table.
Special photobook exhibitions
As well as a special display of books from the Asia Pacific Photobook Archive and Shelley Jacobson’s Open Book exhibition, we’re pleased to be showing photobooks from Mexico.
The Mexican photobook collection presents a range of vibrant contemporary publications, featuring some of the most renowned photographers in Mexico. The collection is an initiative of Ana Paula Estrada, a Mexican photographer who lives and works in Brisbane.

What does it take to give your photobook legs? As the world of photobooks expands, so do the strategies for distribution. This panel brings together three outstanding practitioners who are working hard to shift books locally and internationally.

Book your space at Photobook New Zealand
One of the highlights of Photobook New Zealand will be the bookfair, starting at the launch party on Friday 11 March 2016 and continuing on Saturday 12 March.
The book fair is a great opportunity to showcase your publications – print or electronic – to a wide range of interested people, make sales and network with others. We want to show a wide range of excellent, innovative New Zealand and international photobook publishing, and welcome bookings and inquiries.
To answer a question we were asked recently – it’s also fine to book a space just to show your work, rather than sell it.
There are flexible options for configuring spaces and we’ve done our best to keep prices affordable.
Bookings close on 14 February 2016 or when all spaces are booked. Spaces are filling, so don’t delay.
CNZ grant
The Photobook New Zealand team was delighted to learn that we’ve received a Creative New Zealand grant for our event. Combined with our generous sponsorship from Momento Pro and funding from our wonderful Boosted supporters, we have the budget to realise New Zealand’s first Photobook event as we intend it. We’re looking forward to sharing the awards, the bookfair and the great programme of speakers and panels with you, and others interested in the arts.

For the first time, the Photo Media Department of Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design has placed emphasis on the photo book format within their curriculum. Year 3 Photo Media students will present their own photo books at the inaugural end-of-year book event launching on 13th November 2015 and running over two days.
The work will also be on display on Saturday 14 November, accompanied by a talk from Anita Tótha (Founder of Photobook Club Auckland and Remote Photobooks) and includes a screening of the short film documentary ‘Pictures on Paper: Photobooks in New Zealand’ (produced by Tangent Photography Collective).
The film profiles both established and emerging artists and photobook makers such as Ann Shelton, David Cook, Solomon Mortimer, and Shelley Jacobson and delivers a lively insight into the current photo book phenomenon.
The Year 3 photobook launch is on Friday 13 November from 5.30pm – 7.30pm.
The talk and screening takes place Saturday 14 November from 11am – 2pm.

Paris launch of Bruce Connew’s latest photobook
Bruce Connew’s latest photobook, ‘Body of Work’, launches with a few others, Thursday, 12 November, 16-19h, at Le Bal, Paris, during Paris Photo 2015 .. as well, he signs the following day, 16.30h, at Polycopies, the very busy off-Paris Photo photobook fair aboard the Concorde Atlantique on the Seine.

New Zealand Photobook of the Year Awards 2015 open
NEW ZEALAND PHOTO BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2015 OPEN FOR ENTRIES
The inaugural New Zealand Photobook Of The Year Awards 2015 are now open for entries until
8 February 2016. Presented by Photobook New Zealand and Momento Pro, the Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in photo book creation, and provide the opportunity to showcase the work of New Zealand photo artists to a growing local and international audience.
The $10,500 in prizes is designed to help photographers produce and promote their publication.
Self Published Prize: $2,000 cash + $5,000 Momento Pro printing
Trade Published Prize: $1,000 cash + $2,000 Momento Pro printing
People’s Choice Prize: $500 Momento Pro printing
Books can be made via any means or print service but they must focus on photographic content in a visual narrative. The entrant must be the photographer, designer or publisher of the book,and only New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or registered companies are eligible to enter. Entrants must register online and submit a physical book, into one or both categories:
Self Published Photobooks: Published by the creator, includes Dummy books
Published Photobooks: Published by an Independent or Trade Publisher
Judging Chair, David Cook, a founding member of Photobook New Zealand, will lead a panel of design and publishing experts as they assess the books’ excellence in photography, layout, format and audience suitability. “The New Zealand Photobook Of The Year Awards is an important vehicle to promote the work of local artists, and to connect them with the growing international community of photobook makers, festivals, fairs and awards,” says Cook.
Entry to the Awards is free, and submissions close on Monday, 8 February 2016. Winners will be announced at the opening night celebrations of Photobook New Zealand on 11 March 2016. Full details and all Terms and Conditions are available at www.photobookoftheyear.co.nz.

Photobook New Zealand announce three new speakers
In addition to our two keynote speakers, Ying Ang and Ron Brownson, announced earlier – here are three more exciting people who will be presenting at Photobook New Zealand.
Anita Tótha
Auckland-based Tangent Photography Collective (Becky Nunes & Anita Tótha) will screen and discuss their short documentary film Pictures on Paper – Photobooks in New Zealand. The film foregrounds the now; a slice of contemporary book making in the early 21st century. Haruhiko Sameshima, Harvey Benge, Ann Shelton, David Cook, Solomon Mortimer and Shelley Jacobson are some of the important lens-based artists working in the medium today. (running time – 30 min).
Anita Tótha is an American-Hungarian photographer, curator and writer originally from New York. She attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where she majored in photography and completed a mentorship opportunity with photographer Stephen Shore. Prior to graduation, she also completed internships with artist/photographer Simen Johan and the Yossi Milo Gallery. For the next four years, she worked at the gallery, gaining experience in gallery business, curation, and exhibitions.
Anita is currently based in Auckland, New Zealand and is co-founder of Tangent NZ, a New Zealand photography collective and founder of Remote Photobooks, an initiative for the international distribution of select New Zealand photobooks. She also runs the Auckland branch of The Photobook Club and is on the advisory panel of the Asia Pacific Photobook Archive in Melbourne. Anita has contributed photography writings to Feature Shoot (USA), Light Journeys (AUS), ProPhotographer Magazine (NZ) and D-Photo Magazine (NZ). She has also lectured on photography and photobooks at the State University of New York (Rockland), Unitec (NZ) and Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design (NZ).
Daniel Boetker-Smith
The Director of Melbourne’s Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive, Daniel Boetker-Smith, will talk about this unique collection of photobooks. The Archive now stands at nearly 1000 books, and Daniel will be bringing over a broad collection from all parts of the Asia-Pacific region, most never seen before in NZ.The Archive is the only collection of its type in the world. Daniel will talk specifically about the recent emergence and development of the photobook in the Asia-Pacific region focusing on a number of collectives and organisations making a mark internationally. Daniel will also discuss opportunities and methods of getting your photobook out into the world.
Daniel Boetker-Smith is the Director of the Asia-Pacific Photobook Archive, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to collecting, sharing and promoting photobooks from this region. The Archive has exhibited at events and workshops in Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia, Denmark, Ireland, USA and the UK, and attends a number of festivals each year, sharing its collection with the widest possible audience. The Archive also recently ran the Asia-Pacific Photobook Prize, the winner Zoe Croggon’s book ‘Arc’ was released in September 2015. Daniel is also the Course Director at Photography Studies College, Melbourne, and one of the founders of the Photobook Melbourne Festival held in February 2015. He has been a judge for the Prix Picket Prize, the Kassel Photobook Prize, and regularly writes for a number of online and in-print publications on photobooks – Photoeye, VOP, Paper Journal, Vault Magazine, & Photofile.
Tim J Veling
Noted Christchurch photographer Tim J. Veling will talk about his photography and book making practice, highlighting his autobiographical bodies of work Pre-marital Bliss, D, P, O (Dad, Pete, Opa), and Red Bus Diary. By discussing these bodies of work in context with other work made in pre and post-quake Christchurch, Tim will emphasise his interest in the psychological and social-political landscape, as related to concepts of home, belonging, place and time.
Tim J. Veling’s practice explores the psychological landscape and social-political environment through eloquently conceived images of the physical world. His work is a subtly evocative blending of the genres of fine art and documentary photography. He is currently engaged in the production of several bodies of work documenting the aftermath of Christchurch’s devastating 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.
Tim prefers to engage in long-term, personal projects with emphasis on the production of short run, artist books. Such books include Pre-marital Bliss (exhibited as part of the 4th International Fotobook Festival Dummy Award, 2011,) Red Bus Diary (published by Hazard Press and University of Canterbury,) and Orientation (Al-les Press.)
He has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally and internationally and lectures in photography at the Ilam School of Fine Art, University of Canterbury and is a key contributor to and administrator of Place in Time: The Christchurch Documentary Project.

‘Open Book’ consists of twelve new photobook works, created specifically for exhibition. Its premise is to provoke artists’ experimentation with the book form and to position the book as a gallery experience. Each artist has been given autonomy to pursue and realise a project of their individual interest, as relevant to their current practice. The collective result of these endeavours is a compact exhibition: each artist’s work is folded in on itself or cut and stacked, the content largely hidden from view. To experience it, you are invited to open a book.

Photobook New Zealand – First Keynote Speakers Announced
Hello everyone, we’re delighted to release the first of the keynote speakers for the Photobook New Zealand 2016.
Ying Ang
Melbourne/New York based Ying Ang’s first major monograph Gold Coast won the New York Photo Festival and Encontros Da Imagem book prize for 2014 and was a finalist for 2015 Australian Photobook of the Year. Gold Coast was also listed by Flak Photo, Lensculture, Voices of Photography, Mark Power / Magnum Photos, Asia Pacific Photobook Archive and Self Publish Be Happy in their top photobooks of 2014. She’s currently a part of the teaching faculty at The International Centre of Photography in New York and the Photography Studies College in Melbourne, Australia.
About Gold Coast, Ying writes: “Once labelled as the tourist capital and now declared as the crime capital of Australia, this is a tale of a place that laid the flawed foundation of its character upon a mirage of tranquillity. It is about the price of those swimming pools and sun drenched afternoons. It is about our perceptions of safety and danger within the architecture of our built environment. It is about real estate and the beautiful lie sold and bought here every day.”
At Photobook New Zealand, Ying will cover all aspects of the making of Gold Coast, from the reasons that she made the first pictures, her legal and ethical obligations, her design and printing choices and how she tackled the leviathan of distribution. She will talk about the actual project itself and what it means on a personal level as well as a social level – and more.
Ron Brownson
Ron will take us on a fascinating tour across New Zealand photobook publishing in his presentation –
“New Zealand Photobooks – From Daniel Louis Mundy’s Rotomahana to Harvey Benge’s Le Flâneur”
Ron writes: “Illustrated books have a long history in New Zealand. Daniel Louis Mundy made the first book with images, Harvey Benge now makes a number of books every year. The diversity and intention of local photo-books attests to the vitality of the medium”.
Ron Brownson is the Senior Curator of New Zealand and Pacific Art at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. He’s worked as a professional curator for 35 years and is well-known as an international expert on the history of New Zealand and Pacific art.
