The current exhibition – Flying Carpet is an end of year cornucopia complete with works from 1979 to 2017; vintage photographs, watercolours, jewels made of muka lace, paintings, limited edition artists’ books and agateware teapots. Artists are Adrienne Vaughan, Joanna Campbell & Rowan Panther, Vita Cochran, Octavia Cook, Cat Fooks, Allan McDonald, Solomon Mortimer & Zahra Killeen-Chance, Amelia Pascoe, Lucien Rizos, Kate Small, Richard Stratton, Amber Wilson.

As part of the exhibition we launched Solomon Mortimer and Zahra Killeen-Chance’s new book, Many things were not in the fantasy. Made in Taipei, during Zahra’s residency there earlier this year, the book is pocket size with a discreet navy blue leatherette cover. Set within are 200 pages documenting three years since Mortimer and Killeen-Chance first surveyed their romance in another small book made in Taipei, When the sun sets your eyes change colour (I hope this is true). Many portraits feature, from the tender to the hilarious –  . . . and many dressing gowns.
Available from the Gallery, $50 a copy. To reserve a copy call Anna 021 471047

The exhibition also includes 2 recent Allan McDonald publications, Carbon Empire (2017) and Between the silence and the flame (2016) and  5 vintage photographs from the period of Lucien Rizos’ A man walks out of a bar: New Zealand photographs 1979-1982.

A commemorative photo book

Celebrating the amazing spirit, resilience and achievements in Aceh, Indonesia since the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2004 that decimated so many coastal communities, in print.

The photographer, Dr Noel Trustrum had the opportunity to work alongside the many people and organisations that contributed to the relief, recovery and rehabilitation efforts in Aceh directly after the tsunami, and has since returned to further document the recovery.

The bravery of the local people, many of whom lost their entire families and belongings, left such a strong impression with Noel that he published a small book “SCARS: Life after the Aceh Tsunami”, featuring a time-sequence of photographs depicting landscapes, people and the journey from desolation to recovery during a nine month period following the Tsunami. Noel and his team have researched a number of powerful untold stories and interviewed key people involved in the recovery process for this photo book highlighting the resilience of the people and lessons learnt.

Dr Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, founder of Indonesia’s BRR Institute (for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction), endorses this publication.

A compilation of images and inspirational stories
Working closely with Saritaksu Editions, a publisher based in Bali we have created a book that gives a voice to the photos and enables the Acehnese people, survivors and those involved in the recovery to tell their own story.

New Publication by Peter Alsop: Hand-coloured New Zealand

In this beautiful publication, Peter Alsop celebrates the iconic photography of Whites Aviation.

Hand-coloured New Zealand
The Photographs of Whites Aviation

Author: Peter Alsop
Format: Hardback with jacket
Pages: 408
Size: 305 x 276mm
Publication date: November 2016
Publisher: Potton and Burton
ISBN: 9780947503154

Every single photo coloured by hand? Using cotton wool? Yes, such was the era of hand-coloured photography – a painting and photograph in one – the way you got a high-quality colour photo before colour photography became mainstream.

Some of New Zealand’s best hand-coloured photos were produced by Whites Aviation from 1945. For over 40 years, the glorious scenic vistas were a sensation, adorning offices and lounges around the land; patriotic statements within New Zealand’s emerging visual arts. Now, despite massive changes in society and photography, the stunning scenes and subtle tones still enchant, as coveted collectibles; decorations on screen; and as respected pieces of photographic art.

But, until now, the inspirational story has not been told; nor have the full stories of Leo White (company founder); Clyde Stewart (chief photographer and head of colouring); and the mission-critical ‘colouring girls’.  Hand-Coloured New Zealand also presents New Zealand’s first published collection of hand-coloured photography, and the most extensive published collection of such photography in the world. To help the book get off to a good start,  a pre-release discount of 20% off and free postage in New Zealand is being offered (Use Coupon code WHITES). Ordering is through the publishers site, and will be dispatched immediately on arrival in October.

To coincide with the publication release, Peter Alsop and Greg Wood have co-directed The Colourist – a charming three minute doco featuring Whites Aviation ‘colourist girl’ Grace Rawson, (now in her eighties). The short film is well worth viewing. You can watch it HERE.

Book your space at Photobook New Zealand

One of the highlights of Photobook New Zealand will be the bookfair, starting at the launch party on Friday 11 March 2016 and continuing on Saturday 12 March.

The book fair is a great opportunity to showcase your publications – print or electronic –  to a wide range of interested people, make sales and network with others. We want to show a wide range of excellent, innovative New Zealand and international photobook publishing, and welcome bookings and inquiries.

To answer a question we were asked recently – it’s also fine to book a space just to show your work, rather than sell it.

There are flexible options for configuring spaces and we’ve done our best to keep prices affordable.

Bookings close on 14 February 2016 or when all spaces are booked. Spaces are filling, so don’t delay.

CNZ grant

The Photobook New Zealand team was delighted to learn that we’ve received a Creative New Zealand grant for our event. Combined with our generous sponsorship from Momento Pro and funding from our wonderful Boosted supporters, we have the budget to realise New Zealand’s first Photobook event as we intend it. We’re looking forward to sharing the awards, the bookfair and the great programme of speakers and panels with you, and others interested in the arts.

If you know anyone or any organisation who’d be interested in entering the awards, being part of the book fair or just coming to the event, please share this information.

Tim J Veling

Tim J Veling

Noted Christchurch photographer Tim J. Veling will talk about his photography and book making practice, highlighting his autobiographical bodies of work Pre-marital Bliss, D, P, O (Dad, Pete, Opa), and Red Bus Diary. By discussing these bodies of work in context with other work made in pre and post-quake Christchurch, Tim will emphasise his interest in the psychological and social-political landscape, as related to concepts of home, belonging, place and time.

Tim J. Veling’s practice explores the psychological landscape and social-political environment through eloquently conceived images of the physical world. His work is a subtly evocative blending of the genres of fine art and documentary photography. He is currently engaged in the production of several bodies of work documenting the aftermath of Christchurch’s devastating 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

Tim prefers to engage in long-term, personal projects with emphasis on the production of short run, artist books. Such books include Pre-marital Bliss (exhibited as part of the 4th International Fotobook Festival Dummy Award, 2011,) Red Bus Diary (published by Hazard Press and University of Canterbury,) and Orientation (Al-les Press.)

He has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally and internationally and lectures in photography at the Ilam School of Fine Art, University of Canterbury and is a key contributor to and administrator of Place in Time: The Christchurch Documentary Project.
