Immerse yourself in the surreal world of pinhole photography in this practical hands-on workshop. Make a pinhole camera from recycled materials and explore the possibilities of this unique medium. Develop your negatives in the darkroom and experiment with a wide range of techniques as you create your photographic prints.

Culminating with a weekend art walk and community events on Rosebank Road, Rosebank invites you to experience this neighbourhood through new eyes.

2013 International Photographic Conservators Meeting in NZ

International Photographic Conservators Meeting, Wellington
11 – 15 February 2013

The event will be a joint meeting of the world’s two leading photographic materials groups from the International Council of Museums – Conservation Committee (ICOM-CC) and the American Institute from Conservation (AIC).

These two groups represent the greatest number of countries and people who are doing the most varied work in photographs conservation. They include conservators in private practice as well those employed in the world’s most varied museums, libraries, archives and heritage collection institutions. A number of conservation research scientists also attend these meetings.

It will be the first time either group has met in the southern hemisphere and the opportunity to meet together in Wellington is unique. The meeting will build on established ties between NZ and the international conservation community and will be of particular value to curators and collection managers as well as conservators. The contacts we develop, and the networking that arises from the event will enable more opportunities for exchange of ideas, advice, internships, or fellowships.

Three days will be for the conference and two days for workshops/tours.

Sustainable Photographers Wanted

Ephemeral Permanent: An exhibition of Anthotypes and sustainability.

Are you familiar with the Anthotype printing process?  Interested in environmentally friendly printing techniques?  Do you enjoy chance and embracing an unknown outcome determined by the weather?

Anthotypes are fragile unfixed images, they change over time, and are easily destroyed by the very elements that create them.  Our environment is also fragile, it changes constantly of its own accord, and is constantly changed by the whims of humanity.

In 2014 there will be an exhibition and two week residency in Sau Paulo, Brazil using the Anthotype technique.  The project is called Ephemeral Permanent; the aim of the project is to bring New Zealanders and Brazilians together to develop work investigating ideas of sustainability and environmental awareness through everyday social space and relationships

Richard Mahoney’s images used to help save Canterbury heritage

Since December 2011, photographer Richard Mahoney has been working (alongside Kristina Pickford – Heritage Adviser & CEHBF Fundraising Committee Member)  on an ongoing project to produce images for the Canterbury Earthquake Heritage Buildings Fund campaign. The Trust was formed in late 2010 to provide financial assistance to owners of ‘Qualifying Heritage Buildings’ so that the precious few heritage buildings which remain after the earthquakes and which are feasible to repair, might be saved.

Mahoney was given considerable freedom to produce photographic works that communicate what he considers “valuable” about these buildings. A notable feature of the newly created CEHBF website  and the ongoing funding campaign, is that all of the new imagery is based on large format, 4×5 colour and black & white sheet film.

AFGHAN BOX CAMERA PROJECT

‘As of June 2011 Afghanistan is one of the last places on earth where photographers continue to use a simple type of instant camera called the kamra-e-faoree for means of making a living. The hand-made wooden camera is both camera and darkroom in one and generations of Afghans have had their portraits taken with it, usually for identity photographs. At one stage it was even outlawed when former rulers of Afghanistan, the Taliban, banned photography, forcing photographers to hide or destroy their tools.

The aim of the Afghan Box Camera Project is to provide a record of the kamra-e-faoree which as a living form of photography is on the brink of disappearing in Afghanistan. To this end you will find instructions on how to use and build a kamra-e-faoree, general background information on the camera and photography in Afghanistan, a variety of photo-galleries and photographer portfolios, and links to resources – as well a big thank you to all of those kind folk who helped us along the way. We also delve just a little into large format photography in Afghanistan and hand-coloured portraits.’
