Objects and Reasons

Painted objects, painted photographs, photographed painted objects … and reasons for giving flowers.

Objects and Reasons, an exhibition of artwork by Cathy Tuato’o Ross, has just returned from Photospace Gallery in Wellington. The images are made using interchanging combinations of drawing, painting and photography, which has resulted in the creation of optical illusions. Conventional still life objects and arrangements are played with, and familiar items such as cups, bowls and flowers are reduced to outlines. The artist says that she grew up loving the oddity of the black and white diagrams (devoid of all visual information but the finest outline), which accompanied glossy photographs in coffee table books, and were intended to tell you what it was you were looking at in the illustration. The Objects series is accompanied by a shockingly vibrant group of painted photographs of bouquets. These are titled by the reason that the bouquet was made – for example, consolation, remorse or condolence.

Marking the rebirth of the gallery is ‘DECADE 2000-2010’ an exhibition showcasing the diverse talents of ten graduates that have come through NorthTec’s Visual Arts programme over the past ten years. The exhibition will run through until 26 November and is open to the public.

The new Geoff Wilson Gallery is the centrepiece of the Arts Centre being currently being developed at NorthTec.

My interest lies in the fine balance between optimism as an expression of hopefulness and optimism as an expression of hopelessness. Optimism is often paired with naivety, dim-wittedness or wilful blindness. But I don’t think it should be. Anyone can be an optimist.

I am a reader. Optimism, realistic or misguided, is a state of mind that colours a narrative. Optimism is often evoked through the use of idiomatic expressions. These worn out words and phrases have provided the starting point for this body of work. Read more>>

Clearing.
Something has been cleared for us – what will it show?
Standing on the edge of something new.

When I was a child we spent long days making huts in the pine trees up behind our place. In winter we collected the cones for the fire and every December we decorated a carefully selected branch that would make our house look and smell like Christmas.

As I grew up I learned, in a flip sort of way, to hate the pines with their neat rows spreading over newly bulldozed land. An invasion. Another wave of colonisation replacing the diverse landscapes with monocultural forestry blocks.
