Magnum announce photography workshops in Auckland

MAGNUM WORKSHOPS in Auckland, New Zealand

From May 28th to June 1st, 2015
In collaboration with the Auckland Festival of Photography
Workshop venue: Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, 24 Balfour Road, Parnell, Auckland, NZ
Tuition Fee: 950€

In conjunction with the Auckland Festival of Photography and for the first time in New Zealand, Magnum Photos is thrilled to announce a new workshop in Auckland at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design from May 28th to June 1st, 2015.

Directed by the three amazing Magnum photographers Thomas Dworzak, Olivia Arthur and Chien-Chi Chang, they will offer a new unique intensive photography experience in Auckland through a daily program of shooting, reviews, group critiques, mentoring and editing sessions.

The workshop will end with a public presentation of the participants works produced during the 5 days.

As part of a special partnership with the British Journal of Photography, the editor will work with each Magnum tutor to identify a deserving workshop participant, who will enjoy a special online feature of their work accompanied by an interview.

In addition to the workshop, Thomas Dworzak, Olivia Arthur and Chien-Chi Chang will give a public talk in the course of the festival program – more details to come.

The Auckland Festival of Photography
The Auckland Festival of Photography in 2015 runs 28 May – 20 June. New Zealand’s only photographic festival, brings together artists, academics, curators, students, amateurs and professionals for the aim of encouraging the public to celebrate the art of photography.

Candidates are actively encouraged to participate in the diverse schedule of the festival events. Magnum Photos will present one exhibition, Offside Brazil. which includes work by : Susan Meiselas, David Alan Harvey, Jonas Bendiksen and Alex Majoli. More info

Conditions
Workshop participants should be able to show a good level of photographic aptitude and a desire to learn. Candidates will be expected to arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to photograph. Each workshop is limited to 13 participants and photographers will be selected on the perceived benefit to their career and development.

Photographers should prepare sufficient research relating to what they wish to shoot prior to arrival. A story list will be provided for inspiration; however candidates are expected to formulate realistic projects in the geography and time supplied. Magnum will provide a suitable classroom infrastructure and participants will be responsible for their own time management.

Due to the fast pace of the workshop Magnum highly recommends that participants produce and edit their work digitally, using their own laptops. Individuals wishing to use film may do so, but at their own cost and during the time imposed. Lab services will be coordinated where required and where possible. Please specific in your application your preferred media. Please note – all workshops will be conducted in English.

Auckland Writers Festival – Harvey Benge workshop

Harvey Benge: Sandra Phillips in Auckland

Here’s an update from Harvey Benge  about the recent visit to Auckland, of  Sandra S. Phillips (Senior Curator of Photography, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art).

In both these capacities Sandra acquitted herself with a tremendous generosity of spirit and a ready willingness to share her remarkable knowledge of the photo world accumulated over her many years as chief curator photography at San Francisco MoMA

Auckland Art Fair – panel discussion

On Thursday of last week Sandra participated in a panel discussion at the Art Fair moderated by senior Auckland Art Gallery curator Ron Brownson together with photographers Marie Shannon, Yvonne Todd and myself. University of Auckland: Photography course

University of Auckland’s Centre for Continuing Education are running an ‘Introduction to Photographic Technique and Composition Course’ over two upcoming Saturdays (17th and 24th August 2013). Photographer Mark Beehre is the course presenter.

Attendees will learn the technical skills of photography and understand compositional strategies of photographic practice. The course is designed to provide the tools to move beyond the automated ‘point-and-shoot’ style of photography to a more creative, controlled and powerful means of self-expression.

Photographs fuel fiction

Photographs in back issues of PhotoForum magazine recently found a new life providing inspiration for creative writing students.

The opportunity arose when Auckland author Sue Orr wanted a collection of expressive photography to put in front of young aspiring writers at a short fiction workshop at the National Library in Auckland. PhotoForum secretary Jan Young delivered a large bundle of magazines packed with images, which became the taking off point for the young writers. Sue, who is the author of two noted short story collections, reports that the students were captivated by the photographs and it was extremely interesting to discover where the images had led fictionally. She plans to use the work again in future workshops

Harvey Benge: Photography workshop with Sandra Phillips in Auckland

Following the successful photography workshop held last year at Auckland’s AUT University – St Paul Street Gallery, with now NYC MoMA curator Quentin Bajac and Pieter Hugo, this year in August, Sandra Phillips Curator of Photography at San Francisco MoMA will be coming to Auckland.

Sandra has been photography curator at SFMoMA since 1987 and is one of the most influential curators in the medium working today. She has maintained SFMoMA’s position as having one of the most active departments of photography anywhere. Sandra has been responsible for a host of exhibitions including those involving William Klein, Daido Moriyama, Diane Arbus, Larry Sultan, and most recently Rineke Dijkstra and Garry Winogrand. She is an empowering teacher and an engaging personality.

Sandra Phillips will also be in Auckland as guest and key-note speaker for the Auckland Art Fair, where the focus this year is on photography. The Art Fair opens Wednesday August 7. The photography workshop runs over 2 days, Saturday August 10 and Sunday 11 August, and will be presented in AUT’s new state of the art digital design facility. Workshop attendees will receive a complimentary pass to the Auckland Art Fair so that they can go to the panel discussion with Sandra Phillips and Auckland Art Gallery senior curator Ron Brownson on the afternoon of Thursday August 8.

This is a unique opportunity to have your work reviewed by and learn, first hand, from one of photography’s most iconic personalities.

The Capture Pinhole Photography Workshop 2013, Auckland

2013 International Photographic Conservators Meeting in NZ

International Photographic Conservators Meeting, Wellington
11 – 15 February 2013

The event will be a joint meeting of the world’s two leading photographic materials groups from the International Council of Museums – Conservation Committee (ICOM-CC) and the American Institute from Conservation (AIC).

These two groups represent the greatest number of countries and people who are doing the most varied work in photographs conservation. They include conservators in private practice as well those employed in the world’s most varied museums, libraries, archives and heritage collection institutions. A number of conservation research scientists also attend these meetings.

It will be the first time either group has met in the southern hemisphere and the opportunity to meet together in Wellington is unique. The meeting will build on established ties between NZ and the international conservation community and will be of particular value to curators and collection managers as well as conservators. The contacts we develop, and the networking that arises from the event will enable more opportunities for exchange of ideas, advice, internships, or fellowships.

Three days will be for the conference and two days for workshops/tours.
